The Italian Wars (1494-1559) were a series of conflicts fought primarily in the Italian Peninsula, but later expanding into other regions. The main belligerents were the Valois kings of France and their Habsburg opponents in the Holy Roman Empire and Spain. These wars resulted in the Spanish Habsburgs dominating Italy and shifting power from Italy to northwestern Europe
