We’re discontinuing use of tags for pages behind the lead page for series. We are also discontinuing them for capital cities, even on first pages, unless the series refers to matters local to that place.
As this site has grown, the sheer volume of content has resulted in tag bloat. The tags have become almost unusable. So, we’re cutting them back.
Our policy for books (Herodotus and Parkman) will have to be decided in the future. For now, it is obvious that tags that cover an entire book should be applied only once, located at the first page of the book. For example, the tags, France, French Empire, the tag Canado for the Parkman books about the French in Canada don’t need to be applied hundreds of times for all the pages in those books.
Tags were originally intended to operate like index words at the back of books. That idea cannot translate to websites as large as this one. So, we’re having to adapt. If there is a special matter on a particular inside page, we will tag that page for that matter.
As time permits, we will be cleaning out the tags retroactively.
