Another story in the news this month that will have a lasting impact for years to come is how differently Joe Biden was treated versus how Bret Kavanaugh was treated. My addition to the national conversation is that there should be some objective guidelines for how to treat this kind of stories. The starting point, instead of which side is the accused on, should be show me the evidence. Once that starting point is accepted then further reporting can go from there with some assurance that we’re all going on the right path.
As for Senate confirmations of Presidential appointments, accusations of sexual harassment should be handled on a timely basis. The pattern that started with the Thomas and the Kavanaugh hearings was for the opposition party to call for delay while secretly “banking” the accusation. Just before the vote they spring the accusation and then call for yet more delay. The stench of partisanship hangs heavy over this practice.
