From the latest happenings in things historical. This article Civil Forfeiture Came From a Strange Place was published 26 days ago in Bloomburg View. The article’s author is Stephen Mihm.
This article is a history of the practice of government seizing people’s assets such as money.
Civil Forfeiture of assets is designed to get around the Bill of Rights in the United States of America. With this, Policemen can just take a person’s money or anything else he owns. While the person has the right to sue to get his money back, he does not get compensated for court costs and attorney fees. This means that most of the victims do not pursue their legal rights.
Another problem is that the police departments can use their seizures to defray their departmental costs. This creates a conflict of interest in properly administering this practice.
My own conclusion: Civil Asset Forfeiture as it is currently practiced in the USA is evil.
