All Saints Day, 2016

by Jack Le Moine
Today is All Saints Day.

This day celebrates excellence in the field of Christian Religion. The Catholic Church has nailed this down by celebrating saints rather than high clergy like Popes and Cardinals.

The central idea of excellence is the Christian belief that the Church should be in the world, not of it. Worldly concepts of excellence like moving up a hierarchy do not apply to Christian Churches. Rather holiness is the criteria.

There are no women Popes, Cardinals, or Bishops. There are 784 women saint. They are still a minority of the 5,000 odd saints listed in the Catholic Online Database. Recognizing sainthood began 2,000 years ago.
