From the latest happenings in things historical. This article History Isn’t a ‘Useless’ Major. It Teaches Critical Thinking, Something America Needs Plenty More of was published 13 days ago in Los Angeles Times. The article’s author is James Grossman.
James Grossman is the executive director of the American Historical Assn.
The point that history teaches critical thinking skills may be more of a goal than reality, given all of the left-wing political correctness in today’s colleges. Historians who only think inside a left-wing box and discourage any thoughts outside of that box are unlikely to be effective at teaching critical thinking skills. History majors should be better at critical thinking skills. The question is whether today’s history teachers are delivering on that or not.
The other significant point the author makes is that history major obtain higher paying jobs that business majors during their mid-career years. If true then this is a significant fact to know.
