Color Pics From Czarist Russia

From the latest happenings in things historical. This article What Russia looked like before 1917 … in color was published 4 days ago in The Washington Post . The article’s subject is the work of is Sergei Mikhailovich Prokudin-Gorskii.

He lived from 1863 to 1944. His biggest project was to photograph the Russian Empire as widely and as systematically as possible and in full color. His process was to take 3 different pictures of the same subject through filters of each the 3 primary colors. Then he laboriously combined them into a composite which was a photo in color.
