Why did Donald Trump survive the many awful things he said?
Political correctness (pc). What left-wingers and the establishment elite miss is how pc has grown to a critical mass in America’s culture. It has been the reaction to pc that has seen Trump through. Whenever he has said something bad many folks thought, “yes this is offensive but at least someone is sticking it to all of that pc in the country.”
That being said, I wonder how much more votes Trump would have received had he not done two things:
- After that very first Republican Debate in Cleveland in August, 2015, he had not started a personal feud with Megyn Kelly.
- After the conventions he had not started a personal feud with that Muslim couple — and as that died down had he not started another feud with a former beauty pageant winner.
One could do more what-ifs but we start writing Donald Trump the real person into a fictional character of our own imagination. The Trump campaign could have avoided the tremendous damage that those feuds did to it by not doing them.
To sum up, Donald Trump’s many bad statements would have sunk him had not the backlash against pc compensated for them.
At the same time, Trump was not operating in a vacuum. He was running against Hillary Clinton. How much of the election was due to him winning it or her loosing it?
She also had many negatives going against her. What compensated for them was revulsion against Trump’s bad things. The trouble with that was that Trump’s very bad things were compensated for, too. PC.
And that was the real reason Trump won and Clinton lost.
