This celebrates the French Revolution but I’ve always been of two minds about this. One is the end of the monarchy which held European civilization back. The other was the Reign of Terror. Thomas Jefferson addressed the problem by saying, “the tree of liberty must be occasionally watered by the blood of tyrants.” This was not one of his better moments, though we should note that the monarchies killed and terrorized, too.
In the long run, Europe was better off with the progress of democracy, so let’s celebrate that.
